Fondly remembering Mary Shaw when I visited Cubulco, Guatemala. where she and her partner "deeded" their pioneer mission work to Word and Deed in relationship with FRMI (Free Reformed Missions International), many years ago.

Aunt Mary was an incredible light in the world, a joy to all she met and even those she didn’t meet, young and old. I’m so glad my kids got to meet the witty wonderful woman that I cherished having in my life. Aunt Mary and I became family by “choice” through her friendship with Aunt Jewel. I treasure the time celebrating holidays at their house (Easter dinner & egg hunts, Christmas lutefisk with Santa), popping in for a snack or tea during college at UT, watching current events in the living room and hearing Aunt Mary’s occasional commentary, and being awe-struck by her stories from Guatemala and her childhood, and inspired by her incredible accomplishments both in academics and faith. Thank you, Aunt Mary, for your steadfast example of faith, compassion, and intelligence to love and serve the people God loves.

Although I never had the privilege to meet Mary personally, I got to know her by God's providence via email. I worked as a missionary (2000-2019) in the same town (Cubulco) in Guatemala where she and Helen Neuenswander worked for many years to translate the New Testament into the local Mayan language. In 2019, 66 years after they began the work on the Bible translation (1953), we finished it and now the people of Cubulco have the complete Bible in their heart language. The elderly people there still remember her and Helen with fondness and the work that they both started which also included a hospital has not only continued but expanded through the efforts of AMG International and the Free Reformed Mission International. To God be the glory for the testimonies of both Mary and Helen!

I also attended John Brown University. In 1958 I was a sophomore and Miss Shaw worked for the school while on furlough from Wycliffe Bible Translators along with her translating partner Helen Neunswander who served as the school nurse. Mary was such a fun person and epitome of a joyful Christian. Here were two real live missionaries living an exemplary life before a campus full of undergraduates. Unfortunately I did not get to know either well they imparted my life. Heaven is a bit brighter today.
