Obituary of Garvid Homer Wilson Jr.

Garvid H. Wilson, Jr. was called by his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 6, 2021.  He was born in Luling, Texas on August 15, 1933, to LaRue Templeton Wilson and Garvid H. Wilson, Sr. but after several moves was raised in Austin.  He graduated from Austin High School in 1953.

Garvid worked for Capitol Chevrolet as a service manager while his dad worked in their parts department.  He then worked with the Austin Fire Department where he was a fire inspector and arson investigator.  After leaving the Austin Fire Department, Garvid opened his own business, Wilson Fire Extinguisher Company of Austin, where he became well known in the Austin area.  When he sold the company, he went to work for the State Fire Marshal’s office where he was an Assistant State Fire Marshal.  His department then became a part of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection where he traveled the State testing fire cadets for State certification.

Garvid was raised a Mason at Austin Lodge No. 12, but eventually transferred his membership to Hill City Lodge No. 456.  He was also very active in the Ben Hur Shrine where he was a member of the motorcycle unit and the Mini B’s.  He also held membership in the Colorado Commandry No. 4, Knights Templar.

He was very active in Travis Chapter No. 472, Order of the Eastern Star where he was Worthy Patron four times and an Endowed Member.  He held several appointments for the Grand Chapter of Texas.

He is survived by his current wife, Phyllis Wilson, three daughters, Terri Fallwell (Patrick), Kimberly Stevener (Mike), and Tamara Johnson (Rob), along with six grandchildren, Christie Adams, Alyshia Johnson, Tifani Elliott, Tyler Johnson, Ryan Johnson, and Brandon Elliott as well as two great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his father, Garvid Homer Wilson, Sr., his mother, LaRue Templeton Wilson, his sister, Susan Miller, and his first wife of 33 years, Gloris Dean Wilson.

The family is very grateful for the care of his team from Kindred Hospice, as well as his caretakers, Diane and Sylvia, and those from Visiting Angels.

Visitation will be held at Austin Peel and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Celebration of Life held on Wednesday, August 18 at 10 a.m.

In lieu flowers, the family request that donations be made in his name to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 815 Market Steet, Galveston, Texas 77550 , Attn: Donation Department and/or the Scottish Rite Hospital, 2222 Wellborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219, or a charity of your choice.
