Obituary of Robert Newton Snider
Dr. Robert N. Snider died January 8, 2021 in Austin, Texas. He was the son of Robert Alvin Snider and Francis E. Lyle and was born in Brady, Texas on November 10, 1921. His parents moved to Brownwood, Texas shortly after that.
After graduating from Brownwood High School in 1939, he came to Austin where he was trained as an X-Ray technician at Brackenridge Hospital then worked there while earning pre-med credits at the University of Texas and later a B.A. degree.
While working at Brackenridge Hospital, he met Viola Bowman who was employed there as an assistant dietician. They were married on January 22, 1944.
During the war, he served as Officer in Charge of a Landing Craft Control boat which had the responsibility of leading the first assault wave to the proper beach at the proper time. He participated in three suck operations in the Philippines and when the war ended, was discharged as a Lieutenant Jg.
After graduating from The University of Texas School of Medicine in Galveston, Texas in 1950, he and his family moved to Washington, D.C. where he completed his internship at Garfield Memorial Hospital (Now a part of Washington Medical Center) and residency in Radiology with Drs. Groover, Christie, and Merritt; including training at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology also in Washington, D.C.
Returning to Austin in 1954, he joined the staff at Seton Hospital (Now Seton Medical Center) as head of the Department of Radiology where he served for 36 years. During this time he founded the Austin Radiological Group (Now the Austin Radiological Association) and the Seton School of Ragiologic Technology (Now a part of the Austin Community College Program). He was awarded a Fellowship in the American College of Radiology. Later he returned to college earning a Master’s Degree in Health Professions at Southwest Texas State University (Now Texas State University) graduating with honors in 1984. He retired from active practice in 1990.
He is survived by his son, Robert (Bob) Snider, Jr, his wife Lisa, Robert N. Snider III, all of Austin, and Kimberly Michelle Greene of Phoenix, Arizona, her husband Richard and two children Haley and Jack; James B. Snider and wife Pamela, and children, Emily Frances Snider and William Snider of Southlake, Texas; Susan Lynn Collier and husband John, children David and Michael Collier.
His body will be cremated and ashes to be buried in the Austin Memorial Park Cemetery at private family burial services. At his request, there will be no visitation or memorial service.
