When I was 18, I came from Iran to USA and the University of Texas in Austin, to study engineering. The Franke family was assigned to me as my host family. The Frankes took me in as one of their own. They showed me Christian love when I did not know Christ. The Lord's grace has brought me to faith in Him. I am blessed to have known Pastor Merle Franke and his dear family. I will always remember the way the whole family showed the love of Christ to me. We have exchanged Christmas greetings since I have been married to Patricia, my wife of 50 years now. May the Lord's peace and comfort be with you all.
In His love,
Iraj and Patricia Hemati

I always remember Pastor Franke, "PF", giving the children's sermons at the front of First English. My brother referred to him as "Jesus". He was always such a kind and gentle person, and I was blessed to have him preside over my wedding. We're celebrating our 27th anniversary this year, and I look forward to seeing him again in Heaven one day with all Christ's followers!

I have many fine memories of my uncle Merle. My favorite was a poem he wrote for my winter wedding in January of 1976. He was visiting his mom and dad (grandma and grandpa Franke) in Fargo and I told him I was worried it would snow on my wedding day. He said he would write me a poem and he did, calling it “If it snows on our wedding day.” I’ve shared it with some other pastors who have read it at the weddings they’ve given. Uncle Merle also helped with me through a difficult time when I was a teenager taking the time to write to me and encourage me not to give up. Another memory is watching Merle and Gina walking hand in hand at all the Franke reunions. You could see the love in their eyes that they had for each other. There is now certainly another angel in heaven !! Merle, Rest In Peace!!

Pastor Franke presided over our wedding in 1989, and apparently he did an effective job since we just celebrated our 30th anniversary. Pastor Franke brought a wonderful, personal manner to both our marriage preparations and the ceremony itself. He was a beloved figure at Shepherd of the Hills, and we always felt so grateful that he shared his gifts with our faith community. We are grateful for his immense heart and his lifetime of Christian service. We will cherish his memory.
With condolences to the Franke family,
Diane & Paul Begala

Merle was also a poet of considerable talent. I recall him reading at least twice during our "Poetry at Parsons" series. He will be missed. I hope it will meet with hi family's approval if I add him to the prayer list at St. George's Episcopal. R. E. Hausser
