I just heard the sad news. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. I had only a most peripheral encounter with Mr. Bickerstaff but he heartened and lifted me up to know someone with so much shared history - lived in Midland, UT graduate, Texan with intelligent politics- lived and worked here in Austin. I contributed the cover illustration to his book, There's a Bear Right Behind You. What a joy to know he passed this way!

As President of the League of Women Voters Austin Area, I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Steve several times about redistricting and the change of Austin City Council from an all at large Council to the single member districts we now have. Of course we always benefited from his advice and knowledge. He was such a nice man. We will miss him.
Sincerely,
Frances McIntyre

Friend, classmate, scholar, redistricting expert, author. Talented and compassionate, Steve was committed to making our democracy function more fairly and justly. His last insightful oped was published in the San Antonio Express News only last Thursday. His demise is a loss for good government and good friendship.

I was Director of McDonald Observatory when Steve served on its Board.
Steve and Charlotte became dear friends. They built a house within sight of the Observatory where my wife and I had many lovely evenings. Each evening would end with all lights out and all kinds of wildlife attracted to food left on the patio.
Steve and Charlotte were especially kind to me when my wife died.
Steve was brilliant. He was special.

We were classmates at both San Jacinto Jr High and MHS. Steve was always head and shoulders above many of us in the world of academics. I was much the runt on the jr. high football team, the only.year I recall Steve being involved in rough and tumble athletics. I do remember how Steve’s shoulder pads seemed way oversized...which made him look quite the mountain to deal with. He fooled us with the softest and kindest of hearts.
Which male in sr. high didn’t drool over Steve’s beautiful, snazzy GTO!!? And he cared for it in the fashion which obviously reflected his life....go for it, do your homework, be considerate of others. What a Good One he provided for the rest of us!!!

Steve was a good, caring person and friend. We were classmates at MHS, where we both had leading roles in the Mock Political Convention our senior year: an involvement by Steve that foreshadowed his subsequent involvement in political and election matters. We re-connected at the White House reunion and stayed in contact by email and personal visits whenever I was in Austin. We shared a love of natural and wilderness areas, although Steve saw and walked in many more of them than I have. My siblings, visiting last week, enjoyed reading his book, "There's a Bear: Right Behind You!," which recorded his love of nature and his wife, Charlotte, who shared his wilderness adventures. I was looking at it myself and thinking of Steve when I received news of his untimely death. He will be greatly missed. We will be sharing memories of him at the MHS reunion Friday evening while others are doing so in Austin.
