Colonel Donald L Smith, USAF Ret Colonel Donald L Smith, USAF Ret, of Leander TX, passed away peacefully on June 21 2018 with his family by his side. Don was born in Sturgis, MS on April 2, 1933 to Marriete M Smith and Hettie Lee Smith. Don received a BS degree from Mississippi State University and an MS from the University Of North Dakota. Col Smith received his commission in the USAF in 1954. His heroic 23 year career included service in Vietnam where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross among many other awards. He was a navigator on numerous aircraft and a Minuteman missilier. After retiring, Don worked two years as manager of Marshal Ford Marina and ten years at Texas Instruments. Don was an avid fisherman in the TIBass Club and an active deer hunter. He was preceded in death by his Father, Mother, brother Robert M Smith, his first wife Diane H Smith and his second wife Peggy J Smith. Don is survived by his son Lee A Smith and wife Sarah H Smith, daughter Ann E Smith, nephew Steven C Smith, five grandchildren, one great grandchild and his loving companion Pat Johannessen. Visitation will be held on July 17 from 6pm to 8pm at Austin Peel and Son Funeral Home, 607 East Anderson Ln, Austin, Texas. A private family burial with full military honors will be held the next day at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
